October might be one of our favorite months in Midcoast Maine. The air gets crisp, the leaves begin to turn, and communities from Brunswick to Damariscotta come alive with the sights, sounds and traditions of fall.
Of course, October also brings the leaf peepers—visitors from near and far who come to experience Maine’s spectacular fall foliage. But while they’re taking in the scenery, there’s plenty for locals to enjoy, too.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy October in the Midcoast:
The Leaf Peepers
Midcoast Maine is especially beautiful in mid-to-late October, when the changing leaves create a spectacular backdrop for scenic drives, hikes and weekend adventures.
Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta — October 9–12
If you only make it to one fall event, make it Damariscotta Pumpkinfest. This is one of the most unique celebrations in Maine, featuring giant pumpkins, a pumpkin parade, pumpkin boats racing down the river, food, artists, family activities and plenty of community spirit. The Pumpkin Boat Regatta on Sunday is a must-see!
Pineland Farms Corn Maze
Grab the family and head to Pineland Farms for a trip through its 5+ acre corn maze and pumpkin patch. It’s a classic Maine fall outing and a great way to enjoy the countryside. The maze is open through November 1.
Rocky Ridge Orchard
Nothing says fall quite like apple picking. At Rocky Ridge Orchard in Bowdoin, you can pick your own apples, enjoy the scenery and treat yourself to a fresh cider donut. Apple picking continues through October 31, weather and crop permitting.
Pumpkin Party on the Brunswick Mall — October 17
A fun afternoon for families right in downtown Brunswick. The Pumpkin Decorating & Popcorn Party takes place at the Town Mall on October 17, with pumpkin decorating and plenty of fall fun.
Brunswick Halloween Parade & Tent or Treat — October 31
End the month with one of Brunswick’s favorite traditions. The Halloween parade begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by Tent or Treat on the Town Mall. Costumes, candy and community make this a fun way to celebrate Halloween close to home.
What we love most about October, though, is the sense of community. It’s a time to slow down, support local businesses, gather with friends and neighbors, and enjoy the place we’re lucky enough to call home.
October is a beautiful reminder of why we love where we live.
